Jellyfin for Android 2.7: What Home Server Users Need to Know

Jellyfin for Android 2.7 changes downloads, makes the native player the default, improves Android Auto, and ends future app updates for Android 5 devices.

Published 02 Aug 2026Updated 04 Aug 2026Medium impactAction recommended

What happened

Jellyfin released version 2.7 of its Android mobile app on 2 August 2026. The update redesigns offline downloads, rewrites Android Auto support, makes the native video player the default, and improves codec detection for direct playback.

This is a client-app update. It does not mean you need to rebuild or reinstall your Jellyfin server.

Who is affected

Check this update if you:

  • watch Jellyfin on an Android phone or tablet
  • use offline downloads
  • use Jellyfin through Android Auto
  • want to reduce avoidable transcoding on Android
  • still use Android 5 or Android 5.1

Users who only access Jellyfin through other clients are not directly affected.

What changed

Downloads now use a redesigned in-app system

Version 2.7 adds a dedicated downloads view where downloaded items can be managed and played. The first new download prompts you to choose a storage folder.

Existing downloads cannot be migrated into the redesigned system. If you rely on offline media, check what is stored before removing old files or downloading them again.

The native player is now the default

The Android app previously defaulted to its web player. Version 2.7 switches to the native video player, which Jellyfin says can play more efficiently and reduce the need for transcoding.

The native player also gains improved fallback behaviour, TrickPlay images while scrubbing, quick-seek gestures, and media-segment support.

Android Auto has been rewritten

Android Auto can now browse large music libraries without the previous 250-result limit. Search is improved and audiobook support has been added.

Android 5 support is ending

Version 2.7 is the final release planned to support Android 5 and Android 5.1. The app should continue to work on those devices, but they will not receive later app updates.

Do you need to act?

Most users only need to allow the normal app-store update and test playback.

Take extra action when:

  • you use downloads: choose the new download folder and verify important offline items
  • playback behaviour changes: inspect the Jellyfin dashboard before changing server transcoding settings
  • you use Android 5 or 5.1: plan to move to a supported device if you want future client updates
  • you use Android Auto: test browsing, search, playback, and audiobook access before a long journey

How to check your version

On Android, open:

Settings → Apps → Jellyfin → App details

Confirm that the installed version is 2.7 or later. You can also open Jellyfin’s app-store page to check whether an update is waiting.

While playing a video, open the Jellyfin server dashboard and inspect the active session. It will show whether the stream is using Direct Play, Direct Stream, or transcoding.

What to do next

  1. Update the Android app through your normal app store.
  2. Open the Downloads section before relying on it away from home.
  3. Download one test item and confirm the selected storage folder works.
  4. Play a representative video and check the server dashboard for the playback mode.
  5. If the native player struggles with a file, record the codec, audio, subtitle, and transcoding reason before changing settings.
  6. If the device runs Android 5 or 5.1, treat version 2.7 as the end of the supported update path.

Affected SmallGrid guides

The permanent troubleshooting steps remain in the linked SmallGrid guides below. The main change is that Android users should now expect the native player to be the default when comparing playback behaviour.
